AIGC Lands in Mobile Games: NPC Dialogue and Dynamic Stories Worth Watching

As the AIGC wave sweeps the game industry, mobile gaming has become the crucial testing ground for the technology to land. From the intelligent NPC dialogue system introduced in NetEase's Justice mobile game to AI-assisted generation in character interactions of miHoYo's Honkai: Star Rail, these cases showcase not only AIGC's potential for content creation but also its profound impact on development workflows and player experience.

NetEase's Justice mobile game is a textbook example of AIGC in production. Its intelligent NPC system, built on AI dialogue technology from NetEase's Fuxi lab, lets players hold free-form conversations with non-player characters, with NPCs responding sensibly to context. Launched in 2023, the feature quickly drew attention: player feedback showed the AI dialogue giving the game world a much stronger sense of immersion, and it even spawned a wave of player-made meme videos. NetEase says the system handles millions of dialogue requests a day, powered by a combination of its in-house large language model and an in-game knowledge graph.

miHoYo has leaned harder into AIGC for content generation. In Honkai: Star Rail, the development team used AI to help generate some character dialogue and branching story options, especially in side quests; the AI-generated text preserved character personality consistency while sharply reducing manual writing workloads. In a developer talk, miHoYo's technical team noted that AI-generated content still requires human polish and logic checking, but overall efficiency improved by roughly 30%. This human-machine collaboration model is being adopted by a growing number of mobile game companies.

Beyond the big names, small and mid-sized teams are exploring what AIGC can do. Beijing indie studio Lingjing Interactive, for example, used Stable Diffusion to generate in-game item icons and UI elements for its idle mobile game Codename: Genesis, cutting the development cost of a single asset from several hundred yuan to nearly zero. The team's lead says the AI-generated assets still need manual curation, but they dramatically shortened the early prototyping cycle.

AIGC's impact on the mobile game industry goes beyond content. On the operations side, Tencent's Juewei AI in Honor of Kings—originally a battle AI—has been upgraded into a content generation tool that automatically produces hero balance reports and patch update summaries, helping the live-ops team respond quickly to player feedback. Meanwhile, Alibaba's AI platform Tongyi Qianwen is being used by some mobile games to generate event copy and announcements, pushing operating costs down even further.

Looking ahead, AIGC in mobile games will emphasize real-time performance and personalization. As on-device AI chips spread, in-game AI generation will no longer depend on the cloud, cutting both latency and cost. Qualcomm, for instance, has integrated an AI engine into its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip that supports real-time in-game generation of voice and animation. It means tomorrow's mobile NPCs won't just talk—they'll adjust their expressions and tone dynamically based on player behavior.

The spread of AIGC brings challenges too. Copyright ownership of generated content, logic flaws caused by AI hallucinations, and players' growing fatigue with AI-flavored dialogue are all problems developers must face squarely. The industry consensus: AI should be a tool, not a replacement, and the end goal remains raising games' artistry and playability.

From NetEase's intelligent NPCs to miHoYo's assisted generation, AIGC is redefining how mobile games produce content. For players, that means richer stories and more vivid worlds; for developers, a double liberation of efficiency and creativity. This technological revolution has only just begun.
