3D Artist Shares AI Workflow: Viking Character from Sketch to Finish in Two Hours

In game art, 3D character artists have always been the behind-the-scenes heroes, using masterful skill to turn concept designs into lifelike game characters. With the rapid development of AI technology, that process is being completely reshaped. A veteran 3D character artist recently shared the creation process of a fun Viking character on social media—and astonishingly, with AI tools, the journey from sketch to finished product took just two hours. The case not only demonstrates AI’s efficiency in game art, it has also sparked wide discussion about the industry’s future.

The AI tools the artist used included Stable Diffusion and Midjourney for generating character concept art, followed by ZBrush and Blender for detail sculpting and modeling. For the Viking character, he first used Midjourney to generate a series of character sketches based on Norse mythology elements, then selected the design that best matched his vision and imported it into Stable Diffusion for stylization, producing finer textures and details. The entire concept design phase took just 30 minutes, whereas traditional hand-drawing might take days. He then used the AI-generated images as reference to quickly build a base model in ZBrush, and used Blender AI plugins such as Dream Textures for automatic texture generation, completing the entire concept-to-finish pipeline within two hours.

This case is not an isolated one. In fact, AI’s application in game art is accelerating. Mainstream game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine have already integrated AI tools that help developers automatically generate terrain, vegetation, and buildings. NVIDIA’s Omniverse platform, meanwhile, uses AI to enable real-time 3D collaboration, letting artists focus more on creativity. AI’s use in character modeling is also widening—for example, using GANs (generative adversarial networks) to generate high-resolution textures, or AI-driven motion capture systems like Rokoko’s SmartSuit Pro to dramatically shorten animation production time.

AI’s involvement has sparked controversy, however. On one hand, AI tools dramatically improve efficiency and lower the barrier to game development, letting small indie teams produce high-quality characters too. On the other hand, some artists worry AI will take their jobs and reduce employment opportunities in the industry. Experts say AI is more likely to become an assistive tool than a replacement. As the Viking character artist emphasized, AI-generated concept art still needs an artist’s aesthetic judgment and secondary creation to reach professional standards, and AI still cannot match humans in detail and emotional expression.

Looking ahead, the fusion of AI and game art will deepen further. Epic Games’ MetaHuman Creator, for example, uses AI to generate realistic human characters and lets users adjust facial features with simple sliders. Adobe’s Substance 3D toolset automatically generates materials with AI, further simplifying the texture creation process. As AI technology matures, game characters will become more diverse and personalized, and development cycles will shorten dramatically.

For players, this means experiencing richer, more immersive characters sooner. For developers, mastering AI tools will become an essential skill. As the artist who shared the Viking character put it: “AI is not a threat, it is a partner. It frees my hands and gives me more time to focus on creativity and story.” Under this trend, the game industry is entering a dual revolution in efficiency and creativity.
