Mexican Folk Horror The Hanging of Dolls Brings AI-Driven Nightmares

Amid the current flowering of indie games, a horror title blending Mexican folk traditions with cutting-edge AI has quietly drawn attention: The Hanging of Dolls. Developed by Mexico City indie studio Somnium Interactive, the game takes players to an abandoned Day of the Dead town where every house hangs eerie dolls—doorways into the world of the dead.

What makes The Hanging of Dolls remarkable is not its frights but the AI system driving them. The development team revealed that they partnered with AI company Inworld AI, using its Character Engine to give the game's NPCs dynamic conversational abilities. Unlike traditional scripted dialogue, these large language model (LLM)-driven characters generate reactions in real time based on the player's behavior and tone—and they remember the player's choices, echoing them back hours later in unexpected ways. Producer Carlos Mendes said in an interview: “We wanted every player's horror experience to feel personal. With AI, the spirits in our game are no longer scare devices passively waiting to be triggered, but individuals with ‘memory' and ‘emotion.'”

This is no gimmick. In The Hanging of Dolls, the player's interactions with a vengeful spirit goddess named La Llorona are entirely AI-driven. She shifts her conversational strategy and the story's direction based on the player's moral choices—such as whether to rescue trapped children's souls. The team also used NVIDIA's Audio2Face technology so that characters' facial animations match the rhythm and emotion of AI-generated speech in real time, greatly deepening immersion in horror scenes.

Within industry trends, AI-driven dynamic narrative is becoming horror gaming's new darling. Where Silent Hill: Townfall previously tried to build dread with nostalgic technology, The Hanging of Dolls embraces the future. The Somnium Interactive team said they populate the game world with an AI-generated “folklore database” containing hundreds of variants of ghost legends from across Mexico, ensuring every exploration yields new discoveries. This blend of generative content and handcrafted design preserves the carefully orchestrated tension horror games rely on while introducing unpredictable elements.

Of course, AI-driven design brings challenges too. In playtest feedback, some players complained that AI characters occasionally delivered lines inconsistent with their established character, breaking immersion. In response, the developers adopted a “hybrid control” approach: AI generates candidate dialogue, then human writers filter and annotate it to keep the style consistent. This human-AI collaborative model is becoming a common practice in AI game development.

The Hanging of Dolls is slated for release on Steam and PlayStation 5 in October 2025, timed with Day of the Dead. It is not only a breakout for Mexican indie games but an important case study in how AI can reshape narrative horror. For players, it means every death and every conversation could lead to a different nightmare; for developers, it offers a living blueprint for balancing AI freedom with narrative control. As AI tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney spread, indie teams are achieving the kind of dynamic storytelling once exclusive to AAA blockbusters at far lower cost—a direction the industry would do well to watch closely.
